Learning From Richard Schmidt

Dear Reader,

These monthly articles are in response to the glorious wealth of knowledge that has been presented to me through Richard’s books, videos, demonstrations, and my personal accounts of studying with him directly. I want to share my lessons and experiences with you in hopes that you will learn from it also. These articles are in no way intended to reinvent or rewrite the information in Richard’s books, or any art book for that matter - but rather to build upon this knowledge and further emphasize key concepts in efforts to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the principals.

After all, Richard’s knowledge is a culmination of those artists who came before him plus his knowledge gained from his own study, personal experiences, and discoveries. In learning from painters throughout history and those I admire today, I feel it is important to understand the problems and challenges of these artists and their thought process behind their solutions. I find this approach to studying extremely useful when faced with my own challenges.

I invite you to take these experiences and lessons and apply them into your own work. “Absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own.” - Bruce Lee. But please, do not discard an idea because it is seems too difficult to grasp. Revisit challenging ideas until you understand the thinking behind them - then decide if it is useful or change it and make it better!

I hope that you find these articles informative and enjoyable.

With Gratitude,

Katie Swatland
